The goal of the design process was to explore material properties in order to create a new, interactive, and shape-changing interface that contributed to a joyful experience of relaxation. The process began with a rotating/turning gesture and transitioned from concealing to revealing, resulting in SANDY.

SANDY is a new material composed of Super Sand, small stones, and iron powder. This combination gives SANDY magnetic properties and a sandy texture while remaining soft to the touch. When interacting with the material, Sandy creates unique patterns using four Ultrasonic Distance Sensors (HC-SR04), four gear groups powered by Servo motors (SG90), and four types of magnets that range in strength from 100 grams to 8 kilos.
